DR LYNN H. HARRISON (New Orleans, LA): That was a very nice study. Doctor Krementz in New Orleans was, I think, the first to initiate arterial perfusion of a tumor. He did not use thermoregulation but conventional chemotherapy in order to try and increase the delivered dose of the chemotherapeutic agent. How do you see this being delivered to the tumor clinically?
DR VERTREES: Currently we are involved in a phase I trial where the patients with lung cancer are actually perfused with a modified heart-lung machine and venovenous perfusion-induced systemic hyperthermia. We elevate the temperature of the blood such that the tumor itself reaches about 42.5° to 43°C. Dr Zwischenberger is the principal investigator on this study, and currently we have treated 5 patients and are getting ready to treat 5 more.
