To the Editor:
In our recent review article, the ionized calcium levels for the subject of the case report are incorrectly given as 4.95 mEq/L and 4.97 mEq/L on page 573. These values should be expressed as milligrams per deciliter. As erroneously listed in the article, ionized hypercalcemia is implied, because the normal range for ionized calcium in milliequivalents per liter is only half that of the normal value expressed in milligrams per deciliter. That was not the situation, however, and the correct values should be 4.95 and 4.97 mg/dL (within the normal range of 4.6 to 5.2 mg/dL at our laboratory). Because of the intricate interrelationship of magnesium and calcium metabolism, this is an important clarification. We apologize for this inadvertent error and any confusion that may have been caused to the readers. We are grateful to W. Shirey, MD, at Nova Biomedical for drawing this to our attention.
