Multiplane Transesophageal Echocardiography

Edited by Jos R. T. C. Roelandt and Natesa G. Pandian New York, Churchill Livingstone, 1996 257 pages, illustrated, $99.00 ISBN 0-443-07950-1

David D. McPherson, MD

See also page 1412.

This book provides a description of multiplane transesophageal echocardiography, both the technology and clinical applications. It is meant as a reference in addition to providing basic information concerning transesophageal multiplane echocardiography.

This text as written is directed at a surgical audience who has significant monoplane and biplane transesophageal echocardiography skills. For surgeons without these skills, this would be of less value.

Although this book is well written, its applicability to the surgical audience is limited by a number of factors. The audience needs to have a better understanding of monoplane and biplane imaging before they can use this book to become more versed with multiplane transesophageal imaging. The echo-anatomic correlations need to provide good side-by-side histopathologic and echocardiographic images for the reader to have an appreciation of where these imaging planes arise. Much detail is spent on specific anatomic imaging planes, which is too extensive for the general surgical audience. These planes are variable from patient to patient. Although the examples are extremely good, this text could not be used as a stand-alone text without a standard transesophageal echocardiographic text.

Therefore, although the text is extremely good for those interested in the details of multiplane transesophageal echocardiography, it is of limited use to physicians who are not well versed in the use of monoplane and biplane transesophageal echocardiography.
