The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force was pleased with the response to this year's abstract call, receiving 819 abstract and surgical video submissions. The high quality of the abstract submissions made it possible for the Workforce to develop a program that represents all aspects of adult and congenital cardiac and general thoracic surgery.
New for this year is the Practice Management Summit, which will be held Sunday, January 24, from 7:50 AM–12:00 PM. This program has been designed to provide adaptive strategies to navigate current and future management dynamics of private and academic practice. The Summit will present a comprehensive and timely update on issues surrounding the management and direction of cardiothoracic surgery. The program will encourage discussion by surgeons and practice administrators on issues faced in daily practice, as well as issues faced in the broader healthcare and economic environment.
On Monday afternoon, there will be five Parallel Surgical Forums titled "Adult Cardiac," "General Thoracic," "Congenital Cardiac," "Critical Care for the Cardiothoracic Surgeon," and "Patient Safety." These Forums will run from 1:30 PM–3:30 PM.
The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force has once again developed an excellent program for three separate movie matinees; one for each of the three subspecialties: Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic, and Congenital. Surgical Motion Pictures will be shown Monday afternoon at the Convention Center from 4:15 PM–5:15 PM.
The popular Breakfast Sessions will be held Tuesday morning. The topics include STS National Database: Adult Cardiac; STS National Database: General Thoracic; STS National Database: Congenital; Mediastinal Staging; Minimally Invasive Management of Benign Esophageal Disease; Percutaneous and Transapical Aortic Valves; Destination Therapy—Updated; Options for Mitral Valve Repair; How to Staff an ICU; Surgical Treatment of Hyperhidrosis; Radiofrequency Ablation, Cryotherapy, Gamma Knife, and IMRT for Lung Nodules; and Treatment of Barrett's Esophagus. Visit www.sts.org for further details. Space is limited for the Breakfast Sessions. Pre-registration is highly recommended.
On Tuesday afternoon, there will be five Parallel Surgical Forums that will run from 1:45 PM–5:30 PM. The five Parallel Surgical Forums will be "Adult Cardiac I," "Adult Cardiac II," "General Thoracic I," "General Thoracic II," and "Congenital."
Scientific Posters will be displayed outside the General Session Room on the third floor concourse throughout the entire meeting. Attendees are encouraged to view the Scientific Posters during session breaks to gain knowledge of the innovative research being done in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. All subspecialties of thoracic surgery education will be represented in the Scientific Poster area.
Wrapping up the Annual Meeting on Wednesday is STS University, which is designed for surgeons to take the didactic knowledge learned during the first part of the Annual Meeting and put it to use during hands-on courses. These courses are designed to improve knowledge, competence, and performance in the given topics. Attendees will have the opportunity to register for two STS U courses as each course will be offered twice. The STS U Courses will be held Wednesday, January 27, from 7 AM–9:30 AM and repeated from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM. The hands-on courses include: Thoracoscopic Lobectomy; Mitral Valve Repair: Minimally Invasive Approaches and Repair Techniques; Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement; Mechanical Circulatory Support for Cardiogenic Shock: Advanced Coronary Revascularization Techniques; Pacemaker Lead Removal/Electrophysiology for the Cardiac Surgeon; Minimally Invasive Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation; Simulation in Cardiothoracic Surgery Training; Endoscopic Intervention of the Esophagus; Tracheobronchial Interventions: New Tools for the Thoracic Surgeon; Congenital Course: Hybrid Procedures, Interventional Devices, Balloons, and Catheters; and Pain Management.
Attendees must pre-register for STS University Courses. Hands-on labs will have limited workstation accommodations, so pre-registration is required. For more information on STS University, please visit www.sts.org.
