The Forty-Fifth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California, on January 26–28, 2009, with an attendance of almost 5000, which included surgeons, allied health care professionals, spouses, and exhibitors. Attendees of the Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational sessions, including the Parallel Surgical Forums, Ticketed Breakfast Sessions, Surgical Video Matinees, and STS University.

The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers, the most highly rated papers of the Annual Meeting, which were selected for their appeal to each subspecialty: General Thoracic Surgery—"Surgeon Specialty and Long-Term Survival Following Pulmonary Resection for Lung Cancer"; Adult Cardiac Surgery—"Surgical Repair of Posterior Mitral Valve Prolapse: Implications for Guidelines and Percutaneous Repair"; and Congenital Heart Surgery—"Mortality Is Not a Valid Indicator of Quality Differences Between Cardiac Surgery Programs."

Of particular note were four highly motivational presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, the Lillehei Lecture, and the Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address "The Road Less Traveled: Pioneers and Pioneering," Dr W. Randolph Chitwood Jr emphasized that cardiothoracic surgeons must continue their pioneering spirit to reinvigorate the specialty. He spoke about the importance of attracting young people to the specialty.

The Thomas B. Ferguson lecture was given by Dr Bruce E. Keogh, KBE. Dr Keogh's lecture focused on the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) and how that system seeks to deal with social inequalities and the major effects of obesity, diabetes, and smoking on cardiothoracic surgery outcomes in the United Kingdom.

The inaugural C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by Doris A. Taylor, PhD, with members of the Lillehei family in attendance. Dr Taylor's presentation, "Bioartificial Heart: New Uses for Old Cells," examined how overcoming the lack of donor organs and tackling the immunologic consequences of allotransplantation could greatly improve the outlook for patients in the 21st century.

The Ethics Debate, "Saving Lives Is More Important Than Abstract Moral Concerns: Financial Incentives Should Be Used to Increase Organ Donation" explored the concept of legalizing financial incentives for organ donation to increase the supply of organs for transplantation. Many of the sessions presented at the STS 45th Annual Meeting are now available on the STS Web site at www.sts.org.

Wrapping up the STS 45th Annual Meeting, STS University offered 12 sessions to more than 600 participants. This year's sessions ranged from a hands-on course on thoracoscopic lobectomy to an advanced skills session for cardiothoracic residents. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest techniques of cardiothoracic surgery through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors.

The success of the Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of Edward D. Verrier, MD (Workforce, Chair), Robert J. Cerfolio, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Joseph S. Coselli, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Marshall L. Jacobs, MD (Surgical Symposium Task Force Co-Chair), Joseph B. Zwischenberger, MD (Surgical Symposium Task Force Co-Chair), A. Marc Gillinov, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and James D. Luketich, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair). In addition to these volunteers, the Workforce on Practice Management, under the leadership of Vinay Badhwar, MD, created a dynamic parallel session, as did the Workforce on Patient Safety under the leadership of M. Blair Marshall, MD.

Before the STS 45th Annual Meeting, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2009 welcomed 1181 attendees. The Tech-Con Task Force did an excellent job putting together a program that encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. This year's meeting focused on the latest therapies in the evolution of cardiac and thoracic surgery. New topics included treatment advances in coronary artery disease, the hybrid OR, and new technology for the management of heart failure.

This year, Daniel J. Ullyot, MD, Chaired the Local Arrangements Committee, and Betsey Bradley Urschel, Chaired the Spouse's Post Graduate Program.

The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: Gordon F. Murray, President; Douglas J. Mathisen, First Vice President; Michael J. Mack, Second Vice President; and David A. Fullerton, Secretary-Elect. Douglas E. Wood was reelected as Secretary and Carolyn E. Reed as Treasurer. John H. Calhoon and Richard J. Shemin were elected as Directors-at-Large, and Dr Richard H. Feins was reelected as a Director-at-Large.

A complete listing of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, and Workforces follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS officers, Committee members, and Workforce members for their dedicated service.

Members also elected 114 Active, 58 International, 76 Candidate, and 82 Associate Members this year. The Society now has more than 5800 members.

STS would like to thank the many volunteers from our membership and their families for assisting in the development and implementation of this highly successful meeting.

The STS 46th Annual Meeting will be held January 25–27, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
