The program again featured STS University, which offered 11 hands-on sessions as well as a dynamic patient safety program. This year, each hands-on session was offered twice, thus increasing the opportunities attendees had to take part in this exciting program.
The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured the presentation of three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers: "Immunological Link Between Primary Graft Dysfunction (PGD) and Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome (BOS)," "Aortic Root Replacement in 372 Marfan Patients: The Evolution of Operative Repair Over 30 Years," and "The Rush to Atrial Septal Defect Closure: Is the Introduction of Percutaneous Closure Driving Utilization?"
A variety of other educational opportunities were also available this year, including the Parallel Surgical Forums, Surgical Motion Pictures—offered as Surgical Matinees—Breakfast Sessions, and the Symposium on Beginning Clinical Research in Your Institution: The Basics.
Of particular note were three highly motivating presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, and the Medical Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address "Is There a Role for Our Profession in Solving the Problems of the American Health Care System," Dr John E. Mayer emphasized that the future of the specialty must rely on a combination of patient needs and a renewed sense of professionalism. Elizabeth O. Teisberg, PhD, ME, coauthor of the book, Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results, was the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecturer. Dr Teisberg focused on the need to refocus health care on improving the value it creates for people by keeping them healthier and improving treatment outcomes. The Ethics Debate: "No Heroic Measures–How Soon is Too Soon to Stop?" explored the advisability of discussing and planning to deal with potentially life-threatening complications with patients facing medium- to high-risk operations. These presentations, along with many other sessions from the STS 44th Annual Meeting, are available on the STS Website at www.sts.org.
The success of the Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of Carl L. Backer, MD (Workforce Chair), Malcolm M. DeCamp, MD (Surgical Forums Task Force), Charles D. Fraser, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), James Jaggers, MD (Surgical Forums Task Force Co-Chair), Daniel L. Miller, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Joe B. Putnam, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and Robert C. Robbins, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Chair). In addition the Workforce on Practice Education, under the leadership of Robert E. Emory, MD, created a dynamic parallel session, "Successful Strategies for Practice Enhancement Models for Growth and Efficiency in Today's Environment."
Before the STS Annual Meeting, the 2008 STS/AATS Tech-Con meeting welcomed 1068 registrants. Once again, this program highlighted the newest and most crucial technologic advances affecting cardiothoracic surgery. This year's program was developed with the talents of the Tech-Con Task Force, co-chaired by Joe B. Putnam, MD, and Robert C. Robbins, MD.
The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: W. Randolph Chitwood, Jr, President; Gordon F. Murray, First Vice President; Douglas J. Mathisen, Second Vice President; Douglas E. Wood, Secretary; and Carolyn E. Reed, Treasurer. Bruce E. Keogh was reelected as the Society's International Director, and Jean Deslauriers was elected as the first STS Canadian Director. Mark S. Allen and Robert S. D. Higgins were elected as Directors-at-Large. A complete listing of officers, committee members, council operating board and workforce members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee and workforce members for their dedicated service.
Members also elected 107 Active, 103 International, 79 Candidate, and 106 Associate Members this year. The total membership for the Society is composed of more than 5649 members.
Also this year, Robert Cline, MD, chaired the Local Arrangements Committee, and Betsey Bradley Urschel chaired the Spouse's Post Graduate Program.
The Society thanks the many volunteers from our membership and their families for assisting in the development and implementation of this very successful meeting.
The 45th Annual Meeting will be held January 26–28, 2009, in San Francisco, California.
