The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force was pleased with the response to this years abstract call, receiving almost 815 abstract and surgical video submissions. The high quality of the abstract submissions made it possible for the Workforce to develop a program that represents all aspects of adult and congenital cardiac and general thoracic surgery.
On Monday afternoon, there will be four Parallel Surgical Forums titled "Adult Cardiac," "General Thoracic," "Congenital," and "Practice Education." These Forums will run from 1:30 PM–3:30 PM.
On Tuesday afternoon, there will be five Parallel Surgical Forums that will run from 1:45 PM–5:45 PM. The five Parallel Surgical Forums will be, "Adult Cardiac I," "Adult Cardiac II," "General Thoracic I," "General Thoracic II," and "Congenital."
The popular breakfast sessions will be held Tuesday morning. The topics include Retirement and the Aging Surgeon; Money on the Table; Robotics; The Aging Congenital Patient; Advances in Thoracic Surgery: Endoscopic Management of Barretts Esophagus; Advances in Thoracic Surgery: Update on VATS Lobectomy; and Endovascular Surgery and Hybrid OR Models. Visit www.sts.org for further details. Space is limited for the Breakfast Sessions. Pre-registration is highly recommended.
The Annual Movie night has now been transformed into three specialty Surgical Motion Picture Matinees. The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force has developed an excellent program for three separate Matinees; one for each of the three subspecialties Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic, and Congenital. Surgical Motion Pictures will be shown Monday afternoon at the Convention Center from 4:15 PM–5:15 PM.
Scientific Posters will not be located in the exhibit hall but will be displayed outside the General Session Room on the third floor concourse. Attendees are encouraged to view the Scientific Posters during session breaks to gain knowledge of the innovative research being done in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. All subspecialties of thoracic surgery education will be represented in the Scientific Poster area. Poster authors will be present during the lunch breaks on Monday and Tuesday to answer any questions you may have regarding poster content.
Continuing the success of STS University, there will be 11 courses that will include didactic lectures and hands-on labs. New this year–Attendees will have the opportunity to register for two STS U Courses, as each course will be offered twice. The STS U Courses will be held Wednesday, January 30, from 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM and repeated from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM. The hands-on labs include Valve Sparing Aortic Root Replacement; Endoscopic Management of Barretts Esophagus; Advanced Skills Set for Cardiothoracic Residents; Thoracoscopic Lobectomy; Tracheobronchial Disease: Old Standards and New Frontiers; Mitral Valve Repair: Minimally Invasive Approaches and Repair Techniques; Atrial Fibrillation Surgical Ablation: Concomitant and Stand-Alone—Why, How and Results; Intraoperative Crisis Management in Thoracic Surgery; Mechanical Circulatory Support for Cardiogenic Shock; Advanced Coronary Techniques; and Cardiopulmonary Bypass Update 2008.
STS University will also feature the Patient Safety Symposium combining two unique features for a national meeting of this size. The first is the application of highly successful aviation safety protocols to improve cardiothoracic surgical care. The second is to link completion of the program to malpractice/professional liability insurance premium reductions of between 5% and 15%. The program will be offered Wednesday, January 30, parallel with the STS University Courses. The program will begin at 8:00 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM.
Building on the success of last years Patient Safety program, the 2008 program will include modules in effective team decision making, debriefing (performance feedback), conflict management, and implementing hardwired safety tools. The program will be surgically oriented to specifically address those behaviors necessary to maximize safe surgery. Surgeons from all across the country will be discussing the same initiatives and techniques at the same time. The "ripple effect" back to individual hospitals and practices is expected to be substantial.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is seeking agreements from insurers to provide at least a 5% malpractice/professional liability insurance premium reduction to those who attend the STS University Patient Safety program.
Attendees must pre-register for STS University Courses and the Patient Safety Symposium. Hands-on labs will have limited workstation accommodations, so pre-registration is required. For more information on STS University, please visit www.sts.org.
