The program again featured STS University, which offered one didactic course, nine hands-on sessions, three live surgical procedures, and two videotaped surgeries. More than 600 participants attended STS University for hands-on training in adult cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital cardiac procedures.
The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured the presentation of three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers: "Surgical Lessons from the First 100 Fontan Conversions with Arrhythmia Surgery," "Are Surgical Outcomes for Lung Cancer Resections Improved at Academic Institutions," and "Off-Pump Techniques Benefit Both Men and Women and Narrow the Gender Disparity in Mortality After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: An Intention-to-Treat Analysis of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Cardiac Database."
A variety of other educational opportunities were also available this year, including the Parallel Surgical Forums, a special presentation from James Dove, MD, President-Elect of the American College of Cardiology, Surgical Motion Pictures, Breakfast Sessions, and the Patient Safety Symposium held on Wednesday afternoon.
Of particular note were three highly motivating presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, and the Medical Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address, "The Bright Future of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Era of Changing Health Care Delivery–An Update," Dr Frederick Grover emphasized that the future of the specialty will center on developing new technologies and the active recruitment of residents to cardiothoracic surgery. Former Senator William H. Frist, MD, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecturer, focused on what he sees as the most challenging domestic issue facing the United States today, which is health care. During his lecture, Dr Frist emphasized that cardiothoracic surgeons need to expand their activities beyond patient care to include advocacy. The Ethics Debate, "Professionalism Meets Commerce: Tighter Regulation of Conflicts of Interest in Surgeon-Industry Relations is Needed," highlighted the differences in opinion regarding the need for more regulation of relationships between industry and medical professionals. These presentations, along with many other sessions from The STS Forty-Third Annual Meeting, are available on The STS Web site at www.sts.org. In addition, the Presidential Address will appear in a future issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
The success of the Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of John H. Calhoon, MD (Workforce Chair), Richard H. Feins, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Jeffrey P. Jacobs, MD (Surgical Forums Task Force Co-Chair), Michael J. Mack, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Robert J. McKenna, Jr, MD (Surgical Forums Task Force Co-Chair), and John D. Puskas, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Chair). In addition, the Workforce on Practice Education, under the leadership of Robert E. Emory, MD, created a dynamic parallel session, "Cardiothoracic Surgery Practice: State of the Art," which was presented to a standing-room only audience.
Before The STS Annual Meeting, the 2006 STS/AATS Tech-Con meeting welcomed 976 registrants. Once again, this program highlighted the newest and most crucial technologic advances affecting cardiothoracic surgery. This year’s program was developed with the talents of the Tech-Con Task Force chaired by John D. Puskas, MD.
The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: John E. Mayer, Jr, President; W. Randolph Chitwood Jr, First Vice President; Gordon F. Murray, Second Vice President; Douglas E. Wood, Secretary; Carolyn E. Reed, Treasurer; Nicholas T. Kouchoukos, Historian; and Pedro Del Nido and Michael J. Mack were elected Directors-at-Large. A complete listing of officers, committee members, council operating board and workforce members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee and workforce members for their dedicated service.
Members also elected 165 Active, 186 International, 139 Candidate, and 13 Associate Members this year. The total membership for the Society is composed of more than 5400 members.
Also this year, Stuart Jamieson, MD, chaired the Local Arrangements Committee, and Betsey Bradley Urschel chaired the Spouse’s Post Graduate Program.
The Society thanks the many volunteers from our membership and their families for assisting in the development and implementation of this very successful meeting.
The 44th Annual Meeting will be held January 28–30, 2008, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
