The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force was pleased with the response to this years abstract call, receiving almost 750 abstract and surgical video submissions. The high quality of the abstract submissions made it possible for the Workforce to develop a program that represents all aspects of adult and congenital cardiac, and general thoracic surgery.
On Monday afternoon, there will be five Parallel Surgical Forums titled: "Adult Cardiac," "Adult Cardiac II," "General Thoracic," "Congenital Cardiac," and "Practice Education." These Forums will run from 1:303:30 PM.
On Tuesday afternoon, there will be five Parallel Surgical Forums that will run from 1:305:45 PM. The five Parallel Surgical Forums will be: "Adult Cardiac," "Adult Cardiac II," "General Thoracic: Esophageal," "General Thoracic: Lungs," and "Congenital."
The popular breakfast sessions will be held Tuesday morning. The topics include: Ventricular Assist Devices for Children, Skeletonized IMA, Meet the Experts I: How to Operate After Neoadjuvant Therapy of Lung Cancer, Meet the Experts II: VATS Lobectomy, Meet the Experts III: Percutaneous Valves, Meet the Experts IV: Hybrid Surgery for HLHS, and Meet the Experts V: Thoracic Endografting. Visit www.sts.org for further details. Space is limited for the breakfast sessions. Pre-registration is highly recommended.
The Workforce on Annual Meeting Program Task Force has developed an excellent program for the annual "Movie Night" representing all aspects of the cardiothoracic specialty. Surgical Motion Pictures will be shown Monday evening at the Convention Center from 7:009:00 PM. The timing of this session has been moved an hour earlier than in previous years to meet the needs of attendees.
Scientific Posters will be located in the exhibit hall and will not be moderated. Participants are encouraged to view the Scientific Posters during exhibit hours to gain knowledge of the innovative research being done in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. All subspecialties of thoracic surgery education will be represented in the Scientific Poster area. Poster authors will be present during the lunch breaks on Monday and Tuesday to answer any questions you may have regarding poster content.
Continuing the success of STS University, there will be 11 courses including didactic lectures and hands-on labs. The hands-on labs include: Congenital Heart SurgeryCardiopulmonary Bypass Update: Nuts and Bolts of CPB; Endoesophageal Therapies; Esophageal, Bronchoscopic, and Pleural Ultrasound; RFANavigational Bronchoscopy; Management of Tracheobronchial Disease: Stenting, Ablation Therapy and Surgery; Mitral Valve Repair: Basic and Advanced Techniques; Multidisciplinary Valve Surgery: Techniques and Tips; Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation; SVRPractical Ventricular Assist Device Strategies for the Cardiac Surgeon; and Catheter Based Techniques for Surgeons. The Live Surgeries include: Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy; Endobronchial Ultrasound and Navigational Bronchoscopy; Congenital (Video); Aortic Valve Sparing (Unedited Video); Robotic Mitral Valve Surgery; and Simulator DemonstrationCatheter Based Techniques.
STS University will also feature the new Patient Safety Symposium combining two unique features for a national meeting of this size. The first is the application of highly successful aviation safety protocols to improve cardiothoracic surgical care. The second is to link completion of the program to malpractice/professional liability insurance premium reductions.
The program, offered Wednesday, January 31, from 1:005:30 PM, will include modules in aviation-based safety programs, team building, recognizing the warning signs of impending adverse situations, and cross-check communication. The program will be surgically oriented to specifically address those behaviors necessary to maximize safe surgery, and it will allow surgeons from across the country to discuss a variety of initiatives and techniques. The "ripple effect" back to individual hospitals and practices is expected to be substantial.
STS is seeking agreements from insurers to provide at least a 5% malpractice/professional liability insurance premium reduction to those who attend the patient safety program.
Attendees must pre-register for hands-on labs and the Patient Safety Symposium. Hands-on labs will have limited workstation accommodations. For more information on STS University, please visit www.sts.org.
