To the Editor:
Sawabata and colleagues have pointed out an obvious issue: the clinical value of a tumor marker depends on the type of assaying test and its specificity. In the study by Dr Ferrigno and me [1] assays for CEA were performed using commercial kits (CEA test) provided by CIS bio international (Gif Sur Yvette, France) and following the manufacturer's instructions. The test is highly specific for CEA and does not cross-react with any other antigen.
From a practical point of view, given the highly helpful information we obtained with this particular source of reagents, we recommend the use of the same source, ie, CIS bio international, for any future study in which our data might serve as a starting point or, more simply, in daily practice.
