Right upper lobe venous drainage posterior to the bronchus intermedius

To the Editor:

Spaggian and co-workers [1] are to be congratulated for calling surgeons’ attention to an anatomic variant of pulmonary venous drainage from the posterior segment of the right upper lobe in which a medial venous branch runs immediately posterior to the bronchus intermedius. However, they err in calling this variant "exceptional."

Two radiological studies describe the frequency of this vein at computed tomography. Jardin and Remy [2] observed it in 10 (9%) of 107 patients and Kim and colleagues [3], in 10 (4%) of 280 patients.
