Ann Thorac Surg 2003;75:336
© 2003 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons
This article breeches an important ethical standard in that patients were not informed that they were part of a research study and thus did not voluntarily consent to be research subjects. Patients did, however, receive standard treatment for carcinoma of the esophagus; consented to being treated and had the opportunity to refuse operation or radiotherapy. The editor and reviewers believe that the information learned from this study addresses an important question and provides important and useful information regarding management of this lethal disease in future patients. In deciding whether or not to publish the paper, the editor felt, rightly or wrongly, that the quality of the study and the importance of its conclusions outweighed the ethical transgression. The Annals firmly endorses the Helsinki Declaration and its very important protections provided to patients who participate in clinical research, and does not condone nor lightly publish studies that violate ethical principles of research.
