To the Editor
We thank Drs Misawa, Fuse, and Konishi for their comments. In agreement with them, we also consider that other causes, besides infarction of papillary muscles, may be involved in bad outcome after partial left ventriculectomy. For example, recent studies carried out at our hospital (Heart Institute, University of São Paulo School of Medicine) have shown that mean myocardial fiber diameter greater than 22 µm [1, 2] and the presence of apoptosis [3] are indicators of poor outcome after such surgical procedure.
