To the Editor
The case description by Prifti and associates is a very unusual case and to our knowledge the first reported case in which there is both a mitral valve myxoma as well as papillary valve fibroelastoma. Although we have not been able to review the histologic specimens, the detailed description of the pathology provided to us by the authors is consistent with both diagnoses. This case report reinforces the importance of preoperative or intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography in patients with cardiac tumors. Transesophageal echocardiography is useful in assisting the surgeon to define the exact site of attachment of the tumor as well as to evaluate for the possibility of second tumors or multicentric tumors.
