DR PETER K. SMITH (Durham, NC): Maybe I missed it, but were the two groups exposed equally to the length of cardiopulmonary bypass?

DR COOPER: Yes, sir, they were. There was a slightly longer bypass total period in the deep hypothermic circulatory arrest group, but this was not significantly different. We tried to make the bypass run about 3 hours in both groups.

DR SMITH: A second question. Were they pretreated with indomethacin or something to prevent the thromboxane release we see in this animal model?

DR COOPER: In the macro vessels, yes, we did do that, and in most of our experiments using these techniques we use indomethacin to inhibit vascular effects of prostanoids. We did not use indomethacin in the in vivo study.

DR JOHN D. OSWALT (Austin, TX): Did you carry this study out for at least a number of hours or days on the models to see when this reversed itself? That might be something that would be very beneficial to know.

DR COOPER: Thank you, that is an excellent question, and indeed we considered that, however, this was an acute study and these animals were sacrificed at the end of the in vivo experiments.
