To the Editor

Fox AD, Whiteley MS, Phillips-Hughes J, Roake J. Acute upper limb ischemia: a complication of coronary artery bypass grafting. Ann Thorac Surg 1999;67:535–7.

It has been brought to our attention that the case of "Acute upper limb ischemia: a complication of coronary artery bypass grafting" [1] described by us was the same as that published a few months earlier by Nunoo-Mensah [2]. We regret this duplicate publication.

We published this case report without the knowledge of the cardiac surgeon who performed the coronary artery operation, and without seeking the advice of any cardiac surgeon. Information contained in our report has been contested. Contrary to statements in our case report, there is no note of a preoperative doppler examination, or of pulsatile back-bleeding from the radial artery in the patient’s clinical records. None of the authors of the case report [1] was present at the cardiac operation when the radial artery was dissected. As the vascular surgeon team, we saw the patient for the first time on the second post-operative day.

We regret that it has been necessary for our case report to be withdrawn.
