There were 1,082 registrants present at the Thirty-second Annual Postgraduate Course. The CCCETS Basic Science Lecture given by Judah Folkman of Childrens Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, was entitled "Cardiovascular Angiogenesis." At the Postgraduate luncheon, Beck Weathers of Dallas, Texas, spoke on "Survival on EverestA Personal Account." Co-Chairs Robert B. Karp and Rodney J. Landreneau and the members of the Committee on Postgraduate Education are to be commended for putting together an excellent program, which attracted a large number of attendees. The use of the IRIS-Audience Response System at the Postgraduate Course provided attendees with an opportunity to submit immediate feedback on a variety of questions. This information was both interesting and educationally insightful to the participants.
Continued this year on Tuesday morning were the Clinical Workshops. On Wednesday morning a series of Meet the Experts Session on selected topics was held. These were run concurrently with the popular How I Do It Breakfast Sessions. The J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Paper, "The Influence of Cardiopulmonary Bypass Perfusion Temperature on Neurologic and Hematologic Function After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting," was presented by Richard M. Engelman and was coauthored by A. Bernard Pleet, John A. Rousou, Joseph E. Flack III, David W. Deaton, Penelope Pekow, and Cheryl Gregory. The Poster Sessions were continued this year and included three poster presentation sessions. Each poster was briefly presented by the author in a formal setting and then discussed by the attendees. These sessions were extremely popular and were judged by the participants and attendees as being a valuable addition to the Annual Meeting program. The success of these sessions and the scientific program was due chiefly to the substantial effort of the Program Committee under the vigorous leadership of Edward L. Bove, Keith S. Naunheim, and Edward D. Verrier.
Richard P. Andersons Presidential Address was entitled "Thoracic SurgeryCenturys End." It appears in this volume of The Annals. The Ralph Alley Lecture on "Medical Leadership and the Future of Health Care" was presented by Miles F. Shore of Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
J. Marvin Smith III chaired the Local Arrangements Committee. Mrs J. Marvin Smith III (Jill) chaired the Spouses Hospital Committee. The Annual Reception was held at the Institute of Texas Cultures. Doctor Smith did an excellent job of planning for the various activities in connection with the meeting.
The Fifteenth Spouses Postgraduate Program was organized by Mrs Harold C. Urschel, Jr (Betsey). A good turn-out of spouses attended this Postgraduate course, entitled "Leadership and Empowerment for the New Millennium: Making a Significant Personal Difference in Your Community," presented by Miles F. Shore, Paul N. Uhlig, and Steve Mourning.
At the Annual Business Meeting, the following officers were elected: Nicholas T. Kouchoukos, President; Jack M. Matloff, Vice President; Peter C. Pairolero, Secretary; Gordon F. Murray, Secretary-Elect; Robert A. Guyton, Treasurer; L. Henry Edmunds, Jr, Editor-Elect; and W. Gerald Rainer, Historian. Stanley W. Dziuban, Jr and Irving L. Kron, were elected Councillors at Large. Thomas B. Ferguson remains as Editor of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. A complete list of the officers, committee members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee members for their dedicated service.
Two hundred sixteen new members were elected. The total membership now stands at 4,241.
The Smith, Bucklin staff are to be commended for their hard work and diligence, which produced an outstanding meeting.
The Thirty-sixth Annual Meeting will be held January 31February 2, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
