This article by Bril and colleagues brings up to date a significant experience of transcervical thymectomy for nonthymoma myasthenia gravis.
The presented information seems to suggest that adequate excision of thymic tissue to achieve remission from myasthenia gravis can be achieved by this less invasive approach. Although this goes quite a long way to allay the fear, expressed by some authors, that the less invasive approach may not achieve an adequate operation, it remains desirable in this world of evidence-based medicine to finally settle the issue with a randomized, prospective study. Bril and colleagues, with their previous experience, are well set to achieve this.
