Like the field it describes, the literature on video-assisted thoracic surgery is not yet mature. Most of these citations are from the feasibility reporting phase and only three describe comparisons with open surgery. Many of the articles were chosen on the basis of their illustrations or the volume of experience, or simply to indicate activity in the area rather than as an endorsement of their content or conclusions. Some of these are published together in the September 1993 issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery as the First International Symposium on Thoracoscopy and Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery.
