The systemic inflammatory response during cardiac surgery is a complex chain of reactions. Pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators and effectors are released from different cell types in complicated patterns. A number of different factors have been shown to contribute to the inflammatory response. Several studies have also demonstrated that it is possible to reduce the inflammatory response, or at least to reduce the release of selected cytokines and complement split products by adjustments of the perfusion system.
