DR PATRICK M. McCARTHY (Cleveland, OH): Congratulations to Dr Batista on this very novel operation for patients with end-stage heart disease. Seeing is believing, and during my trip to Brazil last year I saw patients who had been in shock, who, years later are now in class I and are playing soccer. So there is definitely something therapeutic to this operation, and not only acutely; the benefits appear to be sustained in many patients.
The mortality in Brazil has been significant, but I do not think that it has to be that high in different circumstances. In the United States we have operated on 44 patients at the Cleveland Clinic with no perioperative mortality and only two late deaths. But the procedure does not always work, and about . . .
