Right anterolateral thoracotomy is a useful and safe approach for closure of atrial septal defects. This has been again confirmed by the work from Professor Neveux' group. I have personally used this approach in children with an atrial septal defect since 1985. On the basis of experience with 142 patients, I would like to make the following comments.
