To the Editor:
The dilemma discussed by Dr Sade and colleagues [1] concerning a wife who requested what many physicians would consider premature removal of dialysis from her husband after lung cancer surgery, raises a number of vexing ethical issues.
It might be instructive to analyze this problem from the viewpoint of physicians in New York State who faced such a request. They would be unable to remove life support without either written documentation of the patient's wishes, or the legal designation of a health care agent making such a request,
