Treatment of cardiogenic shock remains a major challenge for all medical specialties who are involved. Appropriate use of inotropes (including new drugs such as calcium sensitizers) is the established line of treatment, and this treatment may be combined with intraaortic balloon pump support, if needed. However, there remains a significant number of patients in whom these measures are not sufficient to stabilize the circulatory system.
