The article by Whitson and colleagues [1] is a great example of translational collaboration led by curious surgeons. Since the 1970s, we have known that there is some relationship between host immunity and lung neoplasms with seminal articles examining the role of thymectomy, as well as immune modulation in lung cancer models. The recurring theme was immune compromise, which was a bad result. Forward to the present and we not only have ways of classifying different cells that comprise the cellular arm of the immune system using fancy antibodies and complicated ways of detecting and sorting them, . . .
