    Introduction

The 41st Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, Florida, on January 24–26, 2005, with an attendance of almost 5,500 registrants including spouses and exhibitors. A total of 1,269 members and 511 guest physicians attended the Scientific Sessions.

A variety of other educational sessions were also available this year including the Parallel Surgical Forums, Patient Safety Town Hall Meeting, National Disaster Life Support Program, Surgical Motion Pictures, and the Tuesday and Wednesday Breakfast Sessions.

Of particular note were three highly motivating presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, and the Medical Ethics Debate.
