With great interest we read the article by Friedberg and associates [1] about operation and m-THPC (meta-tetrahydroxyphenylchlorin)mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. This phase I study is an important contribution to understanding the potential role of PDT in this disease.
In 2001, we [2] reported the results of a phase I/II study of surgical intervention and m-THPCmediated PDT in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. When we compared these two studies, we found many likenesses. The total number of patients treated was similar, as was the number of patients treated at the maximum tolerated dose. Median survival was 12.4 months in the study by Friedberg and colleagues versus 10 months in our
