The most common use for diagnostic thoracoscopy in pleural disease is to
clarify whether or not an effusion is malignant. General anesthesia with
single-lung ventilation when combined with new endoscopic instrumentation
produces a high diagnostic yield. These anesthetic and surgical techniques
when used with talc pleurodesis yield a 90% success rate in treating benign
and malignant pleural effusions.
