A successful surgical technique is described that overcomes the problem of
severe size mismatch between the recipient's atrial remnants and the donor
heart atria in patients undergoing orthotopic cardiac transplantation. The
circumferences of the atria are reduced by plicating the atrial remnants
until the appropriate sizes are obtained.
