A simplified technique to gain repeated access to the median sternotomy
incision is presented. The technique involves the use of a sterile
polyester zipper attached to the skin edge. The sternum remains open.
Unzipping the zipper allows for repeated relief of cardiac tamponade and
viewing of cardiac action. Other advantages include prevention of cardiac
compression or kinking of assist device cannulas from sternal closure, ease
in changing of dressings, and quick removal of ventricular assist devices
without reopening the sternum.
