Origins of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery

With the establishment of its own certifying board in 1948, thoracic surgery finally began to be accepted as a full-fledged medical specialty. A founding member of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery traces its historical and medical roots and recalls the philosophical turmoil of its early days.
