A new cardiotomy blood filter with a polycarbonate body, a polyester prefilter, and a nylon screen with 20 µ pores was compared with four other commercially available filters. The Optigard filter was found to function as a "surface filter," which effectively removes blood particles larger than its nominal pore size.
