Closure of the median sternotomy incision using stainless steel wires
passed through the tip of a sternum-perforating awl is a common procedure.
Digital injury can result should the awl shaft suddenly snap during sternal
penetration. Sheathing the shaft with a plastic guard will prevent injury
when this occurs.
