Interruption of the inferior vena cava for thromboembolism is occasionally appropriate following either pulmonary embolectomy or other cardiac operation performed through a median sternotomy. Experience has shown that simple extension of the sternotomy incision to the umbilicus is a quick and practical means of obtaining good exposure for caval interruption.
