A method for inserting the Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery balloon catheter utilizing direct subclavian venipuncture is presented. Our experience has proved this to be a safe and efficient approach to hemodynamic monitoring of critically ill patients, frequently eliminating the need for bedside surgical procedures.
